What is Vertigo?

Vertigo is an altered sense of orientation. Patients may describe it in different ways like a sensation of spinning, unsteadiness, imbalance or in local language as "Chakkar Aana". This problem affects the day to day life of the person often leading to a fear of fall and loss of confidence. Different causes of vertigo can present with different kinds of symptoms.

A thorough and comprehensive evaluation to locate the underlying disease is required to understand the root cause of the problem and suggest an effective treatment for vertigo. Various tests done are

  • Videonystagmography (VNG) It is the most non invasive and accurate way of evaluating vestibular and occulomotar system. It measures and analyses the eye movements during various oculomotor and vestibular tests.
  • Subjective visual vertical (SW)- is an investigation to evaluate the otolith system which is responsible for the perception of verticality.
  • Craniocorpography (CCG) is a neuro-otological investigation to evaluate the vestibulospinal reflex, which is responsible for the maintenance of balance during gait testing.
  • Dynamic visual acuity (DVA) is used for.
  • Early detection of vestibulotoxicity.
  • Detection of bilateral peripheral vestibulopathy.
  • Electronystagmography (ENG) is an important test done to evaluate patients with vertigo, dizziness and balance problems. The study of eye movements provides a lot of information about the functioning of the brain and the balance system. ENG is used to second eye movements in different conditions and with different tests. By analyzing these movements, we are able to understand the area affected by the disorder.
